Well, its almost an year now. What I started as a small hobby, has now become a big passion. Yes, I am talking about blogging. Blogging, I was completely new to it. The only thing which I knew about blogging was that people in the west were more into it and did it for making easy money. So, I thought why shouldn't I ? Today is WORLD AIDS DAY. AIDS has emerged as the biggest killer disease on this earth. Yes, millions of people die every year because of this dreadful disease. AIDS stand for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, a condition in which human immune system gets damaged due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reduces the effectiveness of the immune system and leaves individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and tumors. The HIV gets transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk.

Now the question arises, how does it all happen? How does AIDS actually spread? Well, AIDS spreads because of the following factors -

• improper sexual intercourse involving anal, vaginal or oral sex
• improper blood transfusion
• contaminated hypodermic needles
• exchange between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding

Unlike most of the other diseases, AIDS is considered to be the most dangerous. To make the matter worse, it has become a serious pandemic. Yeah, AIDS is no longer restricted to a particular geographical location. It has spread like anything and now the whole world seems to be gripped by this deadly disease.

Well, I have just gathered few stats from the internet which has left me stunned and I am sure that you too will be shocked after reading it. Just go through the stats below -

• In the United States, an estimated one million Americans are living with HIV.
• In 2007, an estimated 33.2 million people lived with the disease worldwide.
• In 2007, it killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children.
• In India, around 2.4 million people are living with HIV.
• More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
• Africa has 11.6 million AIDS orphans.
• At the end of 2007, women accounted for 50% of all adults living with HIV worldwide, and for 59% in sub-Saharan Africa.
• Young people (under 25 years old) account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide.
• In developing and transitional countries, 9.7 million people are in immediate need of life-saving AIDS drugs; of these, only 2.99 million (31%) are receiving the drugs.
• The number of people living with HIV has risen from around 8 million in 1990 to 33 million today, and is still growing. Around 67% of people living with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa.

• Creating mass awareness about AIDS. Media campaigns and education in schools are among the best ways to do this.
• HIV counseling and testing. Let the HIV infected person know that he is suffering from AIDS and should indulge in a safe behavior. Thus preventing the disease from spreading further.
  
• Antiretroviral treatment should be provided to enable people living with HIV to enjoy longer, healthier lives, and as such it acts as an incentive for HIV testing. It also brings HIV-positive people into contact with health care workers who can deliver prevention messages and interventions.
• There should be a comprehensive sex education for young people. This should include training in life skills such as negotiating healthy sexual relationships, as well as accurate and explicit information about how to practice safer sex. Condoms must be used consistently and correctly by males during sexual intercourse.
• As we have seen earlier that drug abuse is one of the prime reasons for HIV infection today, it should be prevented at any cost. Methadone maintenance and other drug treatment programmes are effective ways to help people eliminate this risk by giving up injected drugs altogether. Needle exchange programmes have been shown to reduce the number of new HIV infections without encouraging drug use. These programmes distribute clean needles and safely dispose of used ones, and also offer related services such as referrals to drug treatment centres and HIV counselling and testing.
• A course of antiretroviral drugs given to women during pregnancy and labour as well as to her newborn baby can greatly reduce the chances of the child becoming infected.
• Everyone be it politicians and leaders in all sectors must speak out openly about AIDS and not shy away from difficult issues like sex, sexuality and drug use.
• Protecting and promoting human rights should be an essential part of any comprehensive HIV prevention strategy.
