Faith - The link between Man and God

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with GOD, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and…..
Prof: So you believe in God?
Student: Absolutely, sir.
Prof: Is God good?
Student: Sure.
Prof: Is God all-powerful?
Student: Yes.
Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t. How is this God good then?
Hmm?
(Student is silent.)
Prof: You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Is Satan good?
Student: No.
Prof: Where does Satan come from?
Student: From…God…
Prof: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?
Student: Yes.
Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything. Correct?
Student: Yes.
Prof: So who created evil?
(Student does not answer.)
Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?
Student: Yes, sir.
Prof: So, who created them?
(Student has no answer.)
Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you.
Tell me, son…Have you ever seen God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?
Student: No, sir.
Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?
Student: No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.
Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?
Student: Yes.
Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.
Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.
Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?
Prof: Yes.
Student: And is there such a thing as cold?
Prof: Yes.
Student: No sir. There isn’t.
(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)
Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat.
But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)
Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?
Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?
Student: You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light….
But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?
Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?
Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.
Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?
Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the
opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?
Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.
Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)
Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is a non-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?
(The class is in uproar.)
Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)
Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so & So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)
Prof: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.
Student: That is it sir… The link between man & god is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving & alive.
this is a true story, and the student was none other than………
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam , Former President, Union of India

Hey, it's nice to see you back in my blog. Glad to be the first person to comment on this post. I'll just ask you something, are you a catholic?
October 29, 2009 7:13 PM
Fascinating. I agree. I guess the same premise would apply to life after death or any thing else science can't measure.

hi friend! just passin by.. this post is really, really awesome!!! thanks,, by the way, nice site you have here.. you've got informative and fun posts too.. would you mind if we exchange links? ^_^ (http://www.ezuca.com)

You are welcome..Rocky! No dear, I am not Catholic. I am a Hindu. I hope it does not matter here or anywhere. Religion should not be a restriction for anyone. Afterall, we are human beings first;)
October 29, 2009 8:59 PM
And yes, can I ask you one question - What made you think so that I am a catholic *DONT_KNOW*
October 29, 2009 9:02 PM
Hi Lauren, Glad to see you here again. Yes, its all faith...in the end :)
October 29, 2009 9:05 PM
Hi Ezuca, thanks for dropping by this blog and many thanks your kind words. Really appreciated. Well, Link Exchange - Let me think over it *DONT_KNOW*

This is one interesting lecture indeed Aswani and makes us really stop for a while to think about it. Faith over Science, very intriguing. Hope all is well with you bro

October 30, 2009 8:56 AM
ok thanks, will add yours. no probs :)
October 30, 2009 9:00 AM
This is a brilliant story aswani when we become scientific minded we always dismiss the theory that god exist i was brought up to believe there is a god and i stick by that until now and secondly i love the response you have given to Rocky's question unfortunately we use relegion to devide the world
October 30, 2009 9:52 AM
Thanks Bro. Yes, Science should not be applied to each and everything. To have faith in God, I do not see any wrong with it. bty, Rocky's question was quite amusing to me=-X
October 30, 2009 3:39 PM
Interesting story Aswani :) . I have been brought up with the believe that there is God and you cannot relate every thing to science.
October 30, 2009 3:54 PM
Very true..shabnam. Thanks for the comment:)
October 30, 2009 4:06 PM
Debating over any belief system, while healthy, is in the end an exercise in futility. Such debates will invariably go in a continuous circle broken only by one or the other participant's lack of clever analogies or suppositions.
The prof. could have asked the (disrespectful) student this question: Would you agree that believing something is true does not make it true?
October 30, 2009 5:13 PM
Very interesting..Jim! Bty, you have used the word - disrespectful - for the student. Why so *DONT_KNOW*
October 30, 2009 5:38 PM
The student resorted to using an ad hominem argument rather than attack the
professor's point. And in doing so he mocked the professor using his fellow
students as an audience. In the end he proved nothing, but his arrogance.
October 30, 2009 7:11 PM
Yeah I have read this story earlier :)
October 30, 2009 9:30 PM
Ok ji..Hope all is well there :)
October 30, 2009 9:33 PM
IC Jim....very interesting:-P

Personally, I find the history of this particular story (and its many permutations and attributions) just as illustrative: http://www.snopes.com/religion/einstein.asp
It's usually said that the student was Albert Einstein. But it could just as well be YOU, Aswani! :)
October 31, 2009 10:57 AM
Hi Holly, welcome again. Well, I just checked your link. And I am very much surprised to see similar thing being said in both. Well, I myself don't know if was Einstein or APJ Abdul Kalam. I got this from one of my friends. Anyways, let it be anyone. Doesn't really matter. Only thing to think over - should we have faith in God or not? And what makes you to have faith in God? Hehehe..You know I never said it :-P
October 31, 2009 8:15 PM
A very educational post. I just drop here via an interview of Lawmacs and should thanks him.
October 31, 2009 9:46 PM
Thank you Arafat. Keep in touch :)
November 2, 2009 3:19 PM
I've seen this post several times now, but never did anyone mention who was
the student. Thanks for finally clearing that up. It's an inspirational read.
Something we'll never get tired reading.
