Social Networking - seems that everyone knows it today. There was a period, say 2 to 5 years back..when there was hardly anything social or let me say it as social networking. And it is just the opposite case today. Social Networking is the buzzword today. You have twitter, You have facebook, You have blogcatalog, You have ibibo..must say..you have so many social sites today. Now, it is a common thing today to see people lurking on these sites and spending or should I say..wasting ;) their precious times behind these social networking.
Yes, wasting their time. The reason I am saying so because it is happening in reality. Well, these social networking sites are turning out to be a big headache, as per what modern organizations have to say. Can't say the same for all social sites but yes, there is one site which has been named in the list. And I am sure..everyone is aware of it. Facebook - one of my favorite social networking sites. Recently or I should say just 2-3 days back I came across one article which had everything going against these social networking sites especially Facebook. And yes, it happens in India. In a very recent survey conducted by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham), it was found that office staff on average spend an hour a day on sites like Facebook, resulting in a loss of productivity measuring 12.5 per cent. And what is most surprising is that majority of these social networking sites are being used for the purpose of Romancing. Well, I don't see anything wrong with it. But yes, offices and organizations are not the place for it. What do you people think ?
Three more interesting findings -
- It was observed that nearly half of office employees accessed Facebook during work time.
- Moreover, four in every 10 workers built their entire Orkut or Facebook profile at office.
- Also, 83 per cent of the employees think there is no harm surfing at work during office hours.
Just to let you people know, in this survey...a total of 4,000 employees between the ages of 21 and 60 from different cities in India including Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai (Bombay), Pune, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Kanpur, were questioned.
So, here we go. Well, can't say much but I agree with the third point. I feel that there is absolutely no harm in surfing these social networking sites during office hours. Infact, I had also read somewhere that people who surf these social networking sites or say it as, those who spend their time in surfing their favorite sites mostly during office hours, are more likely to be more active in their daily work. People who are able to spend 20 percent or less of their time surfing the Internet at work are more productive than those who don't. Workers are more productive when they are able to occasionally do non-work stuff online, that was found in a research conducted by the the University of Melbourne this year. To add to it, short and unobtrusive breaks, such as a quick surf of the internet, enables the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total net concentration for a days work, and as a result, increased productivity.
So, two completely different pictures. What you people have to say ?

very thought provoking post from aks blog! though i am not a office goer i would like to support the option in general that social networking is a time killer especially if you are an addict to that! your working efficiency decreases and it effects your productivity as well.....but i do accept that its fun and we can make friends through social networking....... It only depends on how we manage it and limit them! Be Innovative and Smart as well! :) ;)

I think workers would find other ways to take a mental vacation from work, while at work, if there weren't social networking groups. Before there was Facebook and Twitter, there was (and still is) the water cooler and possibly the upstairs or downstairs coffee shop. My personal favorite was and will always be Freecell when I was working and now while unemployed and working from home. Freecell always helps me find my focus and therefore leads to better productivity.

Thanks Lauren for your views. Yes, everyone needs a break. And employees are not an exception. The only problem lies with the addiction to the sites. Too much of anything is harmful. Hopefully, organizations will learn a lot from these recent findings and take right steps to make sure that it doesn't happen for long.

Hi Aswani, I'm really glad that I'm able to access Twitter at work, it helps that I try to throw in a few job related tweets every once in awhile.
Thanks for the info.

there is no harm. One of the surveys found that social networking helps to improve productivity as well as its misconception that if students use social networking sites they get less marks.

Ah.. whether or not we should surf during office hours, I'm sure we have quite a mix-review on this subject. In my opinion, if the worker is to agree on the benefits of social networking during office hours, he/she needs to have a good discipline while multitasking. I think that's fair. Back in the working days, I'll only log on to social media sites when my work is finished or during non-peak hours. Workers are deserved to take a break but not until it affects the working performances.
Happy Holidays! ;)

Very interesting post Aswani :). Facebook and Orkut are the in-things these days.According to some , social networking during office hours decreases the productivity........ but i believe that it depends on particular individual. If he is able to manage his time well his productivity will definitely increase as these social networking sites give you some break from your daily office work .
And you have proved well with your stats.

Thanks buddy. Yes, I too do not see any harm with it. Infact, I've been also doing the same thing;)

As an employee I should say there's no problem, but think as an employer, I guess the conversation would be quite the opposite. It depends on the position you are standing in. ;)

Thanks Provamsi for dropping by. Yes, it all depends.. ;)
December 28, 2009 4:33 PM

Well well social networking at work for me this can be a distraction depends on the task at hand and with phones like iphone and the others staff can just run to the toilet for five minutes and access the internet i think we need a realistic solution for this issue i think we are allowed reaks and this is time for facebook but some workplace blocks these sites so there are measures that can be put in place so it should not become a work related matter
December 28, 2009 5:00 PM
Yes bro, some workplaces have restrictions to such sites. But then I am not in favor of it:( Hopefully, there should be some other and a much better solution to this problem :)

Thanks Jenie..glad to see you here again. have a nice day :)

It depends on the nature of the work, and whether the social networking interferes with getting it done in a timely manner or taking on a greater share of the load - or whether it is used to learn a new skill or effectively network with colleagues in the same profession or simply serves as a mental break that keeps the employee focused and happy with work the rest of the time. Bottom line: Is it interfering with getting the job done? If so, then it's a bad idea. If not, then no harm done.
Another consideration, of course, is bandwidth - and it would be difficult to ascertain (outside of IT metrics) the total cumulative effect on network performance of all employees who are surfing during office hours. I can see why employers frown on it, but with "office hours" getting longer and jobs becoming more demanding, and pay staying the same or shrinking, allowing some leeway here can increase employee satisfaction and help companies retain talented, knowledgeable workers.

I think surfing these sites occasionally does n harm, in fact it foes good by relieving the person of some stress. No one can work at a stretch and be very productive at the same time. But yes, I would regulate he amount of time spent on things between work.. like social networking. Also, in India the situation is very different most of the ties... people are required to work till really late hours and they hardly get to spend time with their family and for themselves.. so we cannot make a fare comparison with the people and work conditions in other countries.
