Time just passes away. Yes, definitely much sooner than what one would expect. It was never the same before but I must say it is a completely different story today. All credit goes to these social networks which are keeping us busy like anything. I remember when I started using internet, it was nothing more than researching on softwares, downloading video clips and mp3s but it is no more the same. Social Networking is what I am more into now. And I must say I've never been so busy before. For a person like me who was alien to this social networking, nothing can be more soothing to know that it is now one of the things which I enjoy like anything these days. It all began with Orkut, the king of social networking in India. I used to spend most of my time on Orkut, must say it is one of the sites which has revolutionized the art of social networking. Definitely, one of the best sites to hang around with your friends.
But somehow, it didn't appeal much to me. Yes, as the time progressed I found many other social networks which were much better than this Orkut. One of the best social networks, I've been ever was Blogcatalog. Well, as the name suggests..Blogcatalog is all about blogs. It is truly one of the best sites today for social networking but it has a limitation. Yes, if you are a blogger then this is a must join place for you. Blogcatalog is all about bloggers and their blogs. You submit blogs, review blogs, visit other blogs, visit other profiles, leave shouts..I must say it allows social networking in one of the most advanced forms which is highly satisfying for a guy like me. To follow next was the one and only Twitter, which is yet another trend setter in the areas of social networking. Being very unique in terms of social networking, Twitter has revolutionized the art of social networking. The best micro-blogging service of all times, as it is being said so often and again..Twitter has been experiencing phenomenal growth in recent times. Sharing 140 characters of text with your friends..nothing can be more exciting as this one. I've been enjoying it like anything in the past though I am not that active on Twitter these days. And the reason for it is...
The one and only Facebook. A site which I disliked like anything in the beginning but not now. It is one of my most visited sites today. Not a single day passes without logging into facebook. Two things I always enjoy is blogging and making friends online. Though facebook gives me a nice platform to make friends, blogging thing has been missing there. Not an issue for me as I enjoying posting on my walls and others wall too. The wall posting feature is truly one of the most remarkable features of the facebook. Must say, it is quite similar to twitter micro-blogging services but definitely much better as it allows more text to be shared. The like and unlike feature is also very appealing. One thing which I like most about this Facebook is its highly innovative user interface which is very aesthetic. And with facebook rolling on with new changes to its design, nothing can be more fascinating then. Facebook too me is a complete social networking site which has everything for everyone. No other site can match with it..as per what I think.
Now, just when we were thinking that facebook will be enough, we get to know about yet another innovation from the Great Google, Google Buzz. Yes, the battle seems to have begun now with Google entering into the social networking arena. With features like facebook and twitter, Google Buzz does add to the excitement. Though it is still in its early stage, it has created a whole lot of noise in the socialsphere. No to mention, netizens are loving it and me too. Google Buzz still has many issues to be sorted out like privacy issues, text customization, etc..hopefully, it will all be much better in the times to come.
Whatever maybe, Social Media Networking has taken the web by storm. Good or Bad, everyone seems to be enjoying it like anything. Talk about Orkut, Twitter, Facebook or Buzz, these may be competing with each other but ultimately it is we people who are benefiting from it and will continue to experience the same forever..

My experiences are very similar to what you have expressed here Aswani. Also, have you thought how it impacts our life and relationships in particular. I mean the friendships that are online and the friendships that are in non virtual world have different dynamics :)
As a Psychologist, this is s great area for research :)

Social networking is the buzz word these days :) everyone is joining one site or the other .
I am not using Orkut these days but a regular user of Facebook and now Google buzz. I love this social media as i have made quite some friends and being a blogger helps me to meet new bloggers and promote my blogs.

Hi Aswani,
Great article and I can relate to everything you said. I am a member of all the sites you mentioned plus so many others that I can't even remember. :-[
The greatest benefit of social networking sites such as Facebook is the wonderful people I've met and the friendships that have been made as a result. I must admit that I spend to much time on all those sites but it's all worthwhile.

I find myself increasingly relying on Facebook and Twitter to find great links to read. In Twitter I first check my list to check out what my favorite people are up to. Loads of great finds to read! Facebook comes in second, especially the links to funny videos.
Buzz is great for conversations. So many interesting threads that sometimes I forget to jump right in in the discussion. Engrossing indeed. Takes you to the ringside view of how others think, what irritates them, what drives their passion.
Social media can indeed be an impromptu classroom to learn new stuff. Or it can be a nice playground to have fun. 8-)

there are obviously some advantages as well as disadvantages in these social networks but we must not forget that there is a real world out there, i also realised that the younger people esp tends to spend less time reading books, proper reading promotes intellectualism
