So much is being written about the same these days and yet no result. The Bhopal Gas Tragedy, clearly one of the most catastrophic incidents in the Indian history...is alive again with too much of expectations. But as again as ever, these expectations and hopes seems to buried somewhere. Just goes to show, how easy it is for anyone to commit such crime and escape. Its been more than 25 years now, yet no major breakthrough has been achieved in the case. The main accused for the same is still hiding and I am sure, he is safe forever. He won't be summoned or arrested again. As it happens so often in this country...nothing new !

Anyways, having been gone through Bhopal Disaster in the past...the government doesn't seem to have learnt any lesson. It is pity that human lives are being are being traded for few dollars. This has been going on for years and its seems that this will continue forever. A question often comes to my mind - Why do wet get ready for all these? How can we do this? How can our government be so ignorant? Amidst all controversies and hullabaloo, the government still seems to be in a mood to appease foreign corporations. This is clearly evident from the way the government has been handling this civil nuclear liability bill.

To know more on this, please keep reading this piece of an email which I received the other day from Greenpeace India...

Dear Aswani,

The Bhopal judgment is so unfair! The main accused have not been punished and the punishment for the others is insignificant. Even after witnessing this injustice the Government is only considering minor cosmetic changes to the nuclear liability bill so that foreign corporations stay happy.

The bill allows foreign corporations to get away by paying a meager compensatory amount in case of a nuclear accident in the country. The Bhopal case highlights how an American corporation remains untouched even after causing the deaths of over 25,000 people and affecting thousands more.

The liability bill in its current form is another injustice in the making and needs to be changed. You have already signed the petition asking the Prime Minister to stop this bill. More signatures will strengthen the opposition to this bill

Can you please send this email to your friends and family asking them to sign the petition?

Even with the injustices of Bhopal right in front of their eyes, the government seems to be merely considering cosmetic changes to the nuclear liability bill, that mean nothing.

The proposed bill appeases foreign corporations by allowing them to get away by paying a meagre compensatory amount in case of a nuclear accident in the country. The Bhopal judgment highlights the manner in which an American corporation has been so easily let off after causing the deaths of over 25,000 people and affecting thousands more.

We cannot let another Bhopal happen! Over 1.8 lakh people have already signed the petition asking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop the bill in its current form. More signatures will add strength to the opposition to this bill.

Watch this video and then sign the petition to help add more pressure on the PM..

The petition says: "India must hold a public consultation before changing the liability rules for any nuclear accidents caused by U.S. corporations."

The main accused for the Bhopal tragedy have not been punished. While the punishment for the others is paltry.

A nuclear disaster could be worse than what happened in Bhopal 25 years ago. Yet our leaders have set a compensatory amount lower than what was set for Bhopal.

If more and more of us sign this petition the government will know what the people of this country want and prevent another Bhopal in the making.
