This happens with most of us, I mean we bloggers. We all visit blogs but a thing which most of us resist doing is commenting. I think its uncommon for anyone to comment on each and every blog or say, posts. Networking or maintaining good relationship with fellow bloggers is one of the most vital part of successful blogging. And once you maintain the same then you have to get along with things like visits, comments, clicks etc... I guess we all desire for the same.
To comment or not, again depends upon one's mindset. To let you know more about myself, I’ve been visiting so many blogs but do I need to leave comments on all those blogs or say, posts. Absolutely not. It only depends upon my mood...in the end and also on the fact, how well I understood each and everything. I cannot if it does not entice me...to be honest.
No doubts, comments are an integral component of the blog building process as they lend “social proof” but it is also known that all comments are not equal. At times, it turns out to be a big blunder. Anyways, to ensure the legitimacy of my remarks on any particular post, I make sure that I have these 3 simple yet most vital elements in my comments :
My comment has to be relevantI read it, understand it and then leave my remarks making sure that I have contributed effectively to the discussions of any posted content. I know I am not a spammer and if I post anything which is irrelevant then I am surely lacking respect for the site owner and the fellow visitors. I cannot appear to be an intruder by writing anything and everything. It has to make sense in the end to enable community feeling among other visitors.
I have to be helpfulI am commenting but more importantly, I am being helpful to my fellow bloggers by leaving insights, opinions and personal experiences if any. The more thoughts I am putting into my comments, the more helpful I am to them.
I have to be courteous and cordialAt times, I feel like criticizing but there is absolutely no reason for me to be disrespectful or discourteous to anyone. One must remember - Blogging sites are 'social' communities and disruptive tones, behavior or language is not considered very social. If I break this rule then no doubt, I am damaging the harmony of the blogging community and this is what I am not supposed to do.
In short, I have to be everything but finally good. These three key elements has to be in your comments to add more value as a reader. I am following it seriously but Are You ??

Very good blog post here. I think it's very important to emphasize the "right" way of doing blog commenting. I don't think we should even have to choose between "socialization" and "marketing". I really see the all thing as a whole and connecting with people by adding something of value to a discussion while creating backlinks is pretty cool and the quality of the comments we leave on blogs should never be neglected.
I believe the internet marketing business can auto-regulate itself and relevancy and quality always win in the end.
Thanks! :)

Though I don't comment every single time, I often try to leave useful comments and to let the reader know that I actually read the post. I hate those - "Good post!" comments. I have to admit the I was guilty of doing those types of comments in the very beginning. Now, I realize the importance of a good comment.

well said Aswani, comments should be helpful, relevant, courteous and it adds social proof. Have to use use the head rather than just comment spam with the usual one liner 'thanks for sharing' comment. And being disrespectful while commenting or in general anywhere online is to succumb rather than to succeed. Also you have made a good point that it isn't necessary that we comment on all the stuff we read online, but in those cases pas a cordial gesture I personally prefer sharing the post on Twitter,FB or any other social site.

it takes all sort of people to make this world, some times we get excellent comments, at other times the commentaries are just token to say the least, some can be quite nasty, oh mama, but do not forget to have fun along the way
