Over the past decade and a half, the world has been transformed. The transformation has completely changed the way in which we live, work, shop, eat and socialize with each other and the pace of transformation shows no signs of slowing down, in fact completely the contrary as more and more businesses and lives are transformed by the power of the Internet.

In 1965 Gordon E.Moore wrote a paper in which he described the number of processors in integrated doubling every year. This new law – called “Moores law” – has now become an established fact in the computer industry as each new generation of computers is used to build the generation following it and both speed and processing power continue to increase dramatically from year to year.

In the Internet world, the pace of change is even faster with businesses growing, changing and expanding in a timeframe that has never before been seen and with the past as any indication, where we could be another decade is almost anyone’s guess – however I have hazarded a few prophecies that I expect to see fulfilled.

The Connected House

To some extent this “prophecy” has already come to pass with Fridge’s that are able to monitor the contents and place a new order whenever a staple runs low. However I expect that this trend will continue and grow allowing us to not only “control” all of our houses functions but also monitor everything in a real time basis even when not at home.

The Matrix

While I do not expect Neo or Morpheus to come rollicking up, I would expect that our way of learning itself will change not necessarily “plugging in” but definitely more interactive and immersive.
eButler

While some people find shopping enjoyable, for the majority of people it is a chore, especially when shopping for life’s “necessities”. Online shopping already accounts for a significant proportion of all retail purchases and while the majority of people currently use the Internet simply to research new purchase decisions, the trend towards online shopping is growing. As this trend continues, I would expect that more and more research and shopping decisions make the transition online.

PJ Work

Broadband has already transformed the way in which people work and play. With a high speed Internet connection and a VPN token people are now able to get online and work as if they were in the office and I would expect that as speeds increase, this trend would definitely grow. Not having to worry about the daily commute, dealing with the crowds and crowded cities is something I think everyone will enjoy! In addition, as Broadband speeds continue to increase, a truly global economy will come into being where people are employed by companies around the world based on their skills and not just their proximity to the office!

Look Ma, “No Hands!”

There are already pilot studies underway for a truly hands free driving experience. As Mobile Broadband networks continue to grow and saturate the airwaves, it will be possible to have cars themselves become simple nodes on the wire. This will allow for real time monitoring and tracking of all vehicles and also enable people to do other things while taking that long drive to the country!
