I was shocked and  surprised today when I noticed that one of my blogs, the coupon blog where I feature trx coupon and flex belt coupon discounts, had zero page rank...First I thought I was going crazy – why would something as important as Page Rank disappear without a whisper? Maybe it had something to do with my site? I feverishly started checking other sites. I checked Microsoft.com and found to my relief that this too had no page rank. At least we were on the same page on this issue.

Is Page Rank that important?

This got me thinking whether Page Rank is as important as we assume it to be. I went for a Google search on this issue and I found nothing new. What I did find was a new perspective to Page Rank.

First of all, Google does not update Page Rank often – they do it randomly around ten to twelve times a year. Web masters see their page Rank see-saw which means they are elated sometimes and depressed at other times, alternatively. Most of the time web owners and masters struggle to correlate the Page Rank of their website and SERPs. In fact there is no direct link between the two. Page Rank is popular because it’s easy to grasp and easier to explain to clients and bosses. If I were a web master I would find it easy to explain Page Rank to my boss than explain bounce rate, conversion and CTR.

Bounce rate, Conversion and CTR

According to the guys at Google (the guys who are actually tweaking the SERPs), Page Rank has little or no value. What they say is that bounce rate, conversion and CTR is all they bother about while ranking websites for search results. If this was the case, why are we sweating it out trying to improve our PR? Actually what matters is that visitors must get to read content which they are looking for.  This can only be evaluated by taking into account factors which I have mentioned. You must therefore measure these metrics and try to improve on them.

Back to the nasty surprise of Page Rank

Coming back to my surprise, it seems that Google has not done away with Page rank but has only changed the url. This means that browser toolbars and online tools using the old url will be unable to report Page rank till they tweak their code.

Meanwhile some blokes have tweeted that they are able to see Page Ranks even in their Firefox toolbar. As far as I am concerned I am happy with or without Page rank. If Microsoft can lose Page rank and climb down to zero I am not going to complain.
