For a family car, Mazda 6 Sedan boasts a pretty simple & straightforward design. You have cars like Toyota Camry, Ford Fusion & Honda Accord which do the family duties perfectly. But then there is all new Mazda 6. This car has set up a benchmark for the designing of the family cars and told the world that they can be curvy, stylish yet sophisticated.
Despite having the family car tag, mazda 6 2018 drives with pretty much like an enthusiast’s car. Driving duties are done by 2.5-liter inline-4 naturally aspirated engine with cylinder deactivation technology, which is marked at 187 hp @ 6000 rpm & 186 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm of max power and torque. The gearbox includes either a 6-speed stick shifter or a 6-speed automatic with sports mode. This specs are only for two of the base variants i.e. sport & touring.
Move up to the higher variants like grand touring & signature, you will get the same engine but with a punch of a turbocharger. This turbo helps this car to achieve a rated 227hp and 310lb-ft & opt for a premium 93octane and this power bumps up to 250hp.
These numbers are just on papers but this car is something else on road. 0-60mph is achieved in 6.5secs which is not at par with its competitions but it outclasses them in in-gear performance wherein 50-70mph tests it just took 4.2 secs.
These things don’t come at expense of ride quality. The ride is nimble and refined & handling can be said as the class-leading. This car can cut corners very confidently as the body roll is nearly non-existent. Braking is enough for a car of this type of driving dynamics. When you are not in the mood of an exhilarating drive, this car will respect your mood and will help to get a relaxed & comfortable ride.
Mazda 6 2018 got evolved generation after generation & this iteration is the best ever. Designing cues were based on the Vision coupe concept, this car has incorporated some of the finest features. Slimmed LED headlights, larger front grille, sloping roofline and complementing these are the 17-inch alloys, even in the base trims, and the car even looks exhilarating when its treated with its 19-inch premium alloys.
Unlike the exterior, the interior is much calmer and more upmarket. You will definitely be surprised, once inside the Mazda, at the interior which seems to be pretty much in line with a segment above or two. The seats are said to be fatigue-free for long drives and cabin noise insulation is best in class.
Dashboard boasts 8.0 inch touchscreen on which the touch only works when the vehicle is stopped. Its much of an annoying feature but it’s on a safer side. It can be controlled from the rotary knob and it provides the tactile feedback. Its pretty simple to use and once used to it, it’s a gem. It doesn’t come with apple car play & android auto but Mazda says that 2018 end will be witnessing this change.
Getting in and out is pretty easy and front legroom is pretty good but the rear legroom is little cramped but it’s not as bad as Chevy Malibu.
The Mazda 6 is the 4th car in its stable that has received five-star crash test rating from NHTSA. IIHS has not tested this car fully. Unlike most of the sedans, the safety features are spread across the variants. Some of the top features include any speed auto emergency braking, adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control with stop-go assist, blind spot monitoring system and the list goes on. The lineup gets a 360-degree camera setup with rear and front parking sensors.
The final verdict is pretty straight-forward. We would definitely recommend this as a perfect family car. You have an option of a Honda which is a large hybrid, or a Toyota which comes with a V6, but you would not find anything as stylish compact and sexy Mazda6. Overall, it’s a class apart.
