Virtual Disk Image Disaster Recovery – Repair “Virtual Disk Files” From Virtual Machines

Virtualization of data  offers an smart alternative of  bulk  data delivery by allowing flexibility and agility in data access through the creation of a single logical view of data i.e. Disk image  or snapshot of data,  from varied data silos including RDBMSs, cloud data stores and big data stores. Many organization have progressed in their virtual deployment(use of virtual machine for maintaining backup of their old data) and many use it as virtual data(disk) recovery strategies.

56% of organizations experience  loss of data (Virtual disk files)form Virtual environment every day, according to 369 IT professionals surveyed by data protection specialist  Kroll. This introduces a new concern of how to repair or recover virtual images(files or data) from Virtual Machine environment.

Virtual Machine and different File Format

Microsoft is known for  introducing a new and exciting features with every new version of Windows OS it launches. With and after  Windows 7  like in Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, (and Windows Server  R2 2008), Microsoft  came up with  an excellent means of backup software for storing the curial  data in the form of Virtual Hard Disk which made easy backup of data without user of any external hard disk. And other like Oracle, VMware, etc  followed it and invented another formats for virtually saving their data.

Virtual Machine is a system software that introduced the capability of managing different operating system to maintain data virtualization. As this surpass  technologies become a lot powerful and reasonable, virtual machines (VMs) became a way more viable answer for business, storage of  cloud data or big data, etc.

Now let’s learn about File Formats supported by Virtual Machine.

VHD Files

A Virtual Hard Disk(VHD) can be used as the running operating system on designated hardware without any other parent operating system, virtual machine, or hypervisor  that can contain what is found on a physical Hard Disk Drive, such as files, folders, file system and disk partitions.

Furthermore, you can connect the VHD file to a virtual machine for use with the Hyper-V Windows Server 2008 R2. Previous versions of Windows 7 do not support a native boot from a VHD, and they require a hypervisor and virtual machine to boot from a VHD file.

VHDX  files

The VHDX format generally used with the Hyper-V  Windows Server 2012 and now in windows 8 and 10, that  has the decisive edge over the legacy VHD format in almost every respect, including performance and capacity. In addition, Microsoft will provide an easy way for IT  to convert VHD  files to the VHDX format, after upgrading to Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V. With the VHDX format, Hyper-V stores  much larger virtual hard disks. Hyper-V currently has a 2 TB limit for VHDs, but VHDX files  have a 64 TB capacity.

VMDK files

VMDK  format is a file  extension only supported by VMware workstation, originally developed by VMware for its virtual appliance products, is now an open format  and is one of the disk formats used in the Open Virtualization Format for virtual appliances. The maximum VMDK size is generally 2TB for most applications, but VMware vSphere 5.5 introduced 62TB VMDK capacity in September 2013. Because it is now an open format VMDK is now supported by VirtualBox (part of the Oracle VM suite), Parallels Desktop Version 10, Sun xVM etc.

VDI files

VDI file format extension associated with the specification for VirtualBox that is stores data in files like .vdi. used by Oracle VM VirtualBox, an open-source desktop virtualization program, can be mounted as a hard disk on Mac, Windows, and Unix platforms, allows users to run programs written for different operating systems in a high-speed virtual environment. Sun Microsystems acquired xVM VirtualBox from innotek in early 2008. Subsequently, Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010 and now develops VM VirtualBox.

How do we get corrupt virtual hard disk files

Some common causes of deletion of data  from virtualized environments include deleted virtual machines , file system corruption, internal virtual disk corruption, RAID and other storage  failures, and deleted or corrupt virtual disk files contained within virtualized storage systems.

Some ways to repair Virtual disk files

  1. You need to run a script in Windows PowerShell that will assist us to mount the VHD file in the root folder and after that one can run a CHKDSK on it in order to repair VHD file using a manual method,

 Recover VHD files

Same action or method can be performed on to the to repair corrupt VHDX files.

recover  VHDX files

  1. To repair damaged VMDK file, you need to use thevmware-vdiskmanager utility that is installed by the VMware Workstation installer in the installation folder on a Windows host.

 recover VMDK files

  1. To repair VDI file, you need to have all the snapshot of that data files that is accidently got corrupt to perform the manual method to recover it.

 recover VDI file

  1. Manual method are generally very scriptive either we have to execute some code to recover virtual file or perform copy of files form one windows to another. There process may be successful but only in case of less corrupt files or less sized files. What can we do in case of more heavy files or more severely corrupted VHD or VHDX or VMDK or VDI files?

In view of the fact, you must go for  SysInfo Virtual Disk Recovery software safely recover the deleted files form VMs environment. Many organizations do use the third party software for virtual disaster recovery.

Incidents  like  loss image data,  corrupt Virtual disk files and how to recover virtual VMware file has become a very common but every non-computer users should know the way out of it, in addition to  implementing virtual disk image on  data centers onsite, many organizations are increasingly turning to third-party software i.e. Virtual Disk Recovery in order  to properly handle corrupt virtual data  incidents. People try an use  the manual method who  are technically strong but people low technical knowledge are unable to do so.
